Home school education is becoming more and more popular.  If you are a parent who is considering home schooling  your children and are looking for the pros and cons, I have put a list together for you.  I must admit though that I haven’ t found much in the way of negatives.

I am rather sad to say that when my children were young home school education was not permitted.

Benefits of Home School Education

  • Neither you nor they have to be woken up at some unearthly hour of the morning.
  • Neither you nor they have to suddenly hunt for a lost book or some other urgently needed school item.
  • You do not have to worry about sending an unwell child out of doors because of an important test.
  • You do not have to worry about our child being bullied.
  • You do not have to concern yourself about the costs that formal schooling involves.
  • You do not have to worry about your child being led astray because of peer pressure.
  • Your child is able to grow and develop in a secure and familiar environment.
  • Your child is not forced to study a subject that holds absolutely no interest or purpose for him or her.
  • You can tailor the curriculum to suit the child, not the school.
  • The subjects which the children like the least can be alternated with their favorite subjects
  • Your child gets individual attention rather than being one lost soul amongst 30 other children.
  • There are no fixed hours per subject, so your child can spend as much time as needed on any specific subject.
  • Schooling becomes an interesting family activity along with field trips and scientific experiments.
  • Parents get to spend more time with their children.
  • The family is able to share everything from chores to games, and projects.
  • The child is not pressured to achieve beyond his or her ability and thus grow in confidence.
  • Your child does not need to be held back in any subject just because the rest of the class is slower than he or she is.
  • A greater number of interesting field trips can be arranged at times that are more suited to family requirements and pockets.
  • Personal religious beliefs can be incorporated into the curriculum without confusion from outside factors.
  • It will be so much easier incorporating a more unusual subject into your home schooling curriculum, when you child expresses an interest in it.
  • Your child can be a round peg which fits into a correctly sized round hole, rather than a square peg being forced into an incorrectly sized and shaped hole.
  • You can encourage good discipline and manners which usually fall by the wayside in the more formal environment.
  • You do not have to concern yourself about the cost of “show off” clothing.
  • Social interaction is not lost because the kids can join various clubs or institutions e.g. soccer, ballet horse-riding, philately, where they can meet other young people with the same interests.

Negatives of Home School Education

  • You will need to be an organized and disciplined person.
  • You need to have the ability and the interest to ensure that you follow through with your child’s educational and emotional needs.
  • You need to have enough financial security to not have to work outside the home.
