When expecting a child or if you have a young one, it is important for you to make sure that your home is safe for the new addition to the family. Little ones can easily get injured and curious hands will grab at everything, which can lead to potentially harmful situations. Your child’s safety is the most important thing, so it is best for you to lessen the chances of your child getting hurt by making your home childproof.
One of the most dangerous things in people’s houses is electricity. Electricity is provided to homes at very high voltages, and if your child gets exposed to this they could easily get hurt. Electrical outlets should be covered with plastic covers or just with furniture. Electrical cords should be insulated properly and kept away from the reach of children. You can tape the cords to the floor so that your child cannot pull them and knock appliances down.
Make sure that all of your appliances and furniture are well taken care of and that they are not easily broken. If you have any furniture or appliances that can easily be knocked over, attach them to a steady base or to a wall. This is to ensure that they will not fall on top of your child.
Radiators and fireplaces keep us warm during the cold months of the year, but they can be very dangerous if left unguarded. It is necessary to put barriers or grills in front of these things so that your child will not get burned by the heat of the radiator or fireplace.
Staircases are made for adults, and so they are usually too steep for young ones to climb up or down properly. Make sure that your child does not trip and fall down the stairs by attaching gates to the top of the staircase that your baby cannot break through. Also, the railings along the stairs should not be too far apart. If they are more than six inches wide, cover them with screening or some other impediment so your child will not get stuck in them.
Young and curious hands like to pull at handles, so make sure that all of your cabinets, doors, refrigerator doors and drawers are locked. You can put childproof latches on these doors so that you know your child will not get to these things. This is very much necessary for places that have dangerous objects in them.
Windows are also very attractive to young children, since they show the outside world and are interesting. Make sure that your window is guarded with safety nets, window guards, and locks so that your child will not fall through the window. Standard window screens may not be strong enough. You can also arrange the furniture so that your child cannot access the window. There are many more hazards to be aware of in every home, but these are a few suggestions. If you take these precautions, your child will be a lot safer in your house and you will not have to worry as much about them getting hurt in their own home.
