Those unfamiliar with modern cloth diapers may associate cloth diapers with a baby feeling wetness. While that is common occurrence with many cloth diapers, stay dry diapers offer something different.
Stay dry cloth diapers feature a layer of material against the baby’s skin that moisture passes through. Microfleece and suedecloth are popular fabics used in cloth diapers that wick wetness away from the skin. When your baby wets a stay dry diaper the wetness passes through the microfleece or suedecloth against your baby’s skin onto the absorbent material under the microfleece or suedecloth. Unless the cloth diaper is saturated the stay dry material keeps your baby dry. While cloth diapers are designed to be changed with each wetting, the stay dry material may help infants who are more prone to diaper rash. They are also beneficial to nighttime usage.
Pocket diapers are the most common version of stay dry diapers. They feature a stay dry material against the baby’s skin and an outer waterproof material. Between the two layers is a pocket where you place absorbent material. The Fuzzi Bunz Perfect Size pocket diaper is a popular variety. It features stay dry microfleece with soft outer waterproof material and fastens with snaps. The Drybees Pocket diapers feature a stay dry suedecloth material and fasten with easy Velcro-like closures.
There are also some versions of pocket diapers that come with some absorbency already sewn into the diaper. Pockets are used to insert extra material for heavy wetters, naps, or nighttime. The Thirsties Pocket All in One diaper and the Drybees Hybrid All in One diaper both feature a pocket with absorbency already sewn into the diaper.
Probably the most common version of the pocket diaper is the one size pocket diaper. These come with adjustable sizing, waterproof outer material, inner stay dry material, and a pocket to put absorbent material. Some popular versions are Smartipants One Size Diaper with Smart Sleeve Insert, Thirsties Duo Cloth Diaper, BumGenius 3.0 One Size Cloth Diaper, Wahmies One Size Pocket Diaper with Snaps or with Hooks, Baby Kangas One Size Cloth Diaper, Happy Heinys One Size Pocket Diaper with Snaps or Aplix, and Fuzzi Bunz One Size Pocket Diaper with Hip Snaps.
Whichever version of a pocket diaper you choose; the stay dry option is a great choice. Some parents use them full time and others for only nighttime and naptime. Pocket diapers truly are a modern cloth diaper.
